Trip Highlights

Your "Taste of Volunteering" Project

Even here in the island paradise of Fiji, life is not always easy for the locals, but you have the opportunity to improve the lives of two very vulnerable populations at two amazing projects.

The first project is a heart warming experience at a project that supports single mothers and their children. It provides the mothers with emotional and material support so that they can raise their children in a safe environment and they can grow up to be well adjusted and happy adults.

The second project is a home for boys, some of which have suffered some horrendous abuses, where the aim is to instil them the independence, confidence and character traits they need for normal life – and to be successful members of the community. That way they can one day have a family of their own and understand how normal families should behave.

Your activities will be mostly repairs and renovations at both projects. However if you have teaching or building skills, the single mothers project may be better for you, whilst landscaping, mechanical, electrical or plumbing skills, may be more important at the boys' home. As with most projects it all depends on what is needed at the time.

Trip summary

You begin in Nadi, on the west coast of the main island, Viti Levu. You are driven straight to the Pacific Harbor, stopping off at a world-renowned eco bird park on the way. This is followed by an exciting day of village visits, Grade II white water rafting on the Luva river, hiking and waterfall spotting before returning to your hotel.

This beautiful spot has something for everyone; choose from hiking, snorkeling, swimming, or just relaxing by the pool or lagoon. In the evenings why not sample some exquisite traditional Fijian food?

After a couple of days relaxing at leisure, on Day 5 we transfer to Suva and the following day begin your volunteer project with the solo mothers, nestled in the foothills of Suva, or at the boys' home, located just outside of Suva.

Help to improve the living environment for the single mothers and their children, by assisting with gardening; concrete block laying; painting; carpentry; cleaning; cooking; brush cutting; building; helping teach some of the illiterate teenage mothers, or working with their children in the preschool or primary school.

The small boy's home, was set up by a remarkable woman, and began when she discovered a young man, Sujit, who was chained to a bed, and had spent part of his boyhood living in a chicken coop. Sujit's transformation is remarkable, and he was the catalyst for this remarkable orphanage. There are general repair and renovation opportunities here, but if you have specific plumbing, electrical, landscaping or mechanical (they have been donated an old 4WD which the boys would love to restore!) skills they are especially helpful.

After 4 days of volunteering, you say goodbye to your new friends and transfer back to Nadi. The following day enjoy a one-day highland trek which takes in waterfalls and stunning vistas, before our 3 day 2 night cruise of the Yasawa Islands begins.

Aboard your boat, you will spend three days cruising the picturesque Yasawa Islands, where you can snorkel, dive, kayak, swim, or just work on your suntan while enjoying your well earned rest. You will sleep on board your boat. Your trip ends back in Nadi, with transfers to the airport.

*  Comfort Level: Your accommodation is in comfortable 3* hotels (11 nights), and 2 nights in a comfortable cruise ship in the Yasawa Islands.
