Trip Summary
Lilongwe, the political capital of Malawi is your first stop and your base for the next few days. It is a great place to get your bearings and your first introduction to the culture.
However, to really get a feel for this stunning country and its wonderful people it is time to start your volunteer project, either with an HIV/AIDS charity, or helping other people in need. You can spend four amazing days getting to know these amazing, but impoverished people and improving their lives by assisting with:
- Orphan and other vulnerable children care (OVC) - help feed children under six, as well as give them basic education. You can help cook for the children and serve them
- Home Based Care (HBC) - help take care of patients and people living with AIDS. Working in the community, help the patients, by cleaning their homes, fetching water, and generally making their lives easier
- Community Development Construction (CDC) - help build Community Child Care Centers provided your stay coincides with the timing of building work
- Teaching opportunities at all levels, including academic level
- Gardening, planting and maintaining vegetable gardens and trees
- Maintenance and renovation of the school buildings and sometimes in the huts of elderly or vulnerable people who can’t do the repairs themselves
These four rewarding days will pass all too soon, but the great memories will linger.
The following day, you cross into Zambia, to sit on the banks of the Luangwa River, watching elephants cross at dusk and listening to the sounds of the great outdoors. Relax over a drink before retiring for the evening.
For the next two days, you have a morning game drive, with your guide searching for elephants, zebra’s, giraffes, lion, leopard and much more. Enjoy the sights of the Park before returning to camp for a refreshing swim in the pool before entering the park once again for the afternoon game drive/ night drive. This is a unique way to view the nocturnal activity of the park.
Then depart for Chipata, stopping en route at Tribal Textiles Workshop to see the beautiful fabrics made by the local craftsmen and artists.
No trip to Zambia is complete without a visit to the mighty Zambezi River. Let the roar of the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The smoke that thunders”), also known as Victoria Falls, lull you into a restful sleep. The Falls are over a mile in length and more than 5 million liters of water per second can flow over the falls during the rainy season. Spend your two days here exploring some of the optional activities; such as a canoe safari on the upper Zambezi or gain a birds eye view of these impressive falls with a flight in an airplane, helicopter, micro light or balloon. For the adrenalin junkies there is white water rafting and the famous 111-meter bungee jump over the Zambezi River. The sunset cruise, drifting past hippo’s and elephants, is a perfect finale.
You spend your final two days driving over rolling hills through fascinating African landscapes, returning to Lilongwe, Malawi in the late afternoon of the second day, when your adventure ends.
