Your "Taste of Volunteering" Projects:
Prepare to have your preconceptions shattered about life in Rio’s favela communities. The people that call the Pereirão favela home are relentlessly positive, friendly and creative. A few years ago some of the kids from this favela decided to create the ‘Morrinho’ (little hill). A fabulous miniature of the shantytown, which is perched on the hills of Rio, made from discarded bricks. It turned out to be a major success and parts of this miniature have now travelled the world and even ended up at Giardini of the Venice Biennale.
This fulfilling volunteer project aspires to improve two facets of favela life and provides a great way for outsiders to meet these genuine people whilst enjoying some of the best views in Rio. On a cosmetic level the scheme aims
to beautify the living environment, by painting drab walls with colorful murals and repairing buildings. Play your part in reinforcing the sense of community by creating a place that is more attractive and instills a sense of pride.
Another meaningful project provides youth development through sports coaching and one on one teaching programs. Playing sport is an excellent alternative to causing trouble on the streets and if you speak Portuguese, why not give a child a head-start by being a reading partner and improving their English?
If you have specialist medical skills, these are always sought after and you can put them to great use alongside local healthcare practitioners.
Trip Summary:
From the moment you are met at the airport by your local guide, you know that Rio de Janeiro is a very special place. Your guide’s passion for his or her city is infectious, and you are filled with an urge to explore and discover your home for the next 11 days.
Your luxury boutique hotel is located in the trendy bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, complete with fabulous restaurants, art galleries and small museums.
Private tours take you on a colorful journey trough the streets of Rio. Visit renowned sights, such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain, but also step ‘off the
beaten track’ and experience some of Rio’s hidden treasures, including her favela (slum) communities, the wetlands of Marapendi, fishing villages, and exclusive Joá beach, not to mention the fabulous street market ‘Feira de Nordeste’ and a vibrant samba club.
The highlight of your time in Rio is likely to be your volunteering project. It is a fantastic way to interact with the local community in a meaningful way and gain a true sense for the people, and at the same time have a positive impact in their lives. Whatever activity you get involved with, you are sure to leave Rio challenged, inspired and transformed.
