This Hands Up Holidays vacation gives you the unique opportunity to not only soak up this incredible vibe, but also to deepen your experience by really getting to know your African hosts. Interact meaningfully with the local people, by using a few days in your trip to help on one of our rewarding projects. You will feel enriched and have wonderful memories to treasure and they will benefit from your valuable time.
Suggested Itinerary:
What follows is a suggested itinerary, and can be tailor-made to suit your dates, time-frame, and preferred activities.
After arriving at Cape Town International Airport, your local guide picks you up and takes you to your luxury hotel. Time and weather permitting, you take the cable-car up Table Mountain for a magnificent view of this stunning city.
Other tours include Cape Peninsula, a township where you get to meet the local characters, the winelands to sample the fabulous wines, and a challenging hike up Lion's Head for another panoramic view.
Spend as many days as you like volunteering on your chosen project, which includes high-impact sports coaching clinics, teaching in an impoverished school, or helping in an inspiring township community kitchen. This is sure to be a highlight of your trip, leaving you with new friends and many stories to tell when you return home.
Under the suggested itinerary, we have set aside five days for you to attend World Cup games, or join with the crowds watching from one of the big screens.
Please note: With so many great games and venues on display we felt it better to let you buy your own tickets. Some of the venues are far apart, so we suggest you look at the games in Cape Town as your first choice. Fourth phase ticket sales close on the 7th of April.
There are lots of other activities you can do, such as visiting Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was prisoner ofr 19 years, shopping in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, and cage diving with Great White Sharks - there is no chance of getting bored here!
Naturally, if you have time, we strongly recommend extending your trip by a few days to go on safari, or explore the Garden Route; both of which we can arrange for you.
Your choice of Volunteer Projects:
1. Sports coaching
If you have experience in sports coaching, you can help in high-impact clinics arranged by our volunteer partner, who is committed to enabling community development through sport, starting with improved health and self-esteem.
Sport can also be used as a developmental tool to achieve outcomes beyond the sports field such as the relationships between different groups within a community (i.e. young and old / sick and healthy / rich and poor / school and broader community / those in authority and not ). These programmes attempt to go a step further by encouraging good citizenship and motivating sports people to be peer leaders. You can play a part in this.
2. Teaching in a school
Ideally if you have teaching experience, you can help provide one-on-one lessons to students in your area of expertise, which can be reading, writing, maths, computer skills, science or music.
The school is in a township, and you will be teaching children from some of the most deprived communities in South Africa.
3. Helping in a community kitchen
Community kitchens play a vital role in township life as a social meeting point, and as a provider of low-cost, nutritious meals. You can help relieve the workload of the people running these kitchens by helping obtain the raw materials, preparing the meals, and cleaning up afterwards...at the same time sharing laughs, stories, and gaining insights into the lives of the meal providers and those you are serving the meals to.
For all of these projects, your hours are generally from 9am to 3:30pm each day.
Feel free to contact us if you have any enquiries about this trip.
